How to reset an LG washing machine

A power reset can clear a stuck control state on an LG washer, but it will not fix a clogged pump or a failed door lock.

Quick answer

Unplug the washer for about one minute, then restore power. Some models also use a control-panel wake sequence described in the user manual. A reset is not a repair.

People search for a reset when the display is frozen, a cycle will not cancel, or an error remains after they already removed an obvious blockage. A reset is a cheap first step. It is not magic.

Standard power reset

  1. Press Power to try a normal off.
  2. Unplug the machine (do not just switch a soft-power button).
  3. Wait 60 seconds so the control board fully discharges.
  4. Plug in, select a Drain/Spin, and see whether the error returns immediately.

Model-specific sequences

Some LG front-loaders document extra button combinations for diagnostic or “Smart Diagnosis” modes. Those sequences change by series. If a blog tells you to hold three random buttons for 20 seconds, ignore it unless it matches your manual’s model family.

What a reset cannot do

  • Clear a physically blocked drain pump
  • Rebalance a duvet
  • Repair a broken hall sensor

If OE, IE or LE return after a reset, open the matching error-code pages and stop before repeating resets all afternoon.
